- His advice to arriving candidates?
“Leave your ego at the door. It doesn’t matter who you were, but has everything to do with who you are and what you can be. Maintain a positive outlook no matter how many alligators seem to be closing in.
Think. I’ll say that again. Think. Your most powerful weapon is predicated upon what’s between your ears. Stupid people don’t last long in this industry, nor do arrogant ones with all the answers. So act accordingly. Having said that, if you have a question about something that you simply don’t understand, you need to ask it. Effective communication is a key to mission success and mission success starts with us in the planning sequence.
Because of the way the course is programmed, we see a lot of student who spend a disproportionate amount of time worrying. Let it go. Don’t worry about things you can’t control. Focus on your piece of the puzzle and the big picture will take care of itself if everybody executes their mini piece of it correctly.
Lastly, for those desiring serious employment I would pass along these words. There’s a reason behind every action, no matter how seemingly trivial, in regards to what we do. It takes about 3 very intense weeks of seemingly disparate training before it all starts to gel. You can always tell because candidates come down with that “the light bulb just went on” look in their eyes when they “get it”.
I have seen an awful lot of folks self destruct over stupid, trivial issues. The hard reality is that if you can’t handle the moderate stress induced here with dignity and aplomb, there is no way you can hang in the real world. So don’t shortchange yourself and your future by going the half-assed route. Perform to standard or stay in bed.
Last point. If you do well you’ll have a great time. Really. I did. Just remember that you’ll earn it."
